Once XQuartz launches, you can use X forwarding with SSH from the Terminal or from the xterm application in XQuartz.Īdditionally, your personal computer's SSH terminal application must have X11 forwarding enabled: with Xming allowed through the Windows firewall for both private and public networks as you did (note for other users there are a couple of entries in the firewall settings for Xming). It allows you to redirect graphical output of applications you run on remote Unix servers and therefore see these applications windows on your MS Windows desktop.

For X forwarding to work, you'll need to start XQuartz before making an SSH connection to the remote system. Xming is an X Windows port for Microsoft Windows. To use WSL with graphical programs, an X server will need to be installed on the Windows 10 system and the DISPLAY variable will need to be set in Bash.
